PJ Harvey has this way of spoiling her own concerts. Not by being uninspired, but by being too inspired. There are always two or three songs, in which she reaches such brilliant heights, that the other songs seem a bit flat. Not that they are, because Harvey and her band are such good musicians that the performances already qualify as "good" on sheer craftsmanship. And in the Paradiso, the band seemed to have a good time too. It's just that an extremely intense solo performance of 'Rid of Me' leaves you wanting for more, although you know nobody can maintain that level. So you leave, having seen a great show, but still feeling a bit disappointed. Opener Giant Sand had completely different problems. An uninterested crowd, for example. And the fact that Howe Gelb had to do everything by himself. The rest of the band consisted of two members of Grandaddy and two women from a French band, and they didn't seem familiar enough with the material yet to do anything else then back-up Gelb. Only when Bettie Serveert axeman Peter Visser joined for some guitar soloing, did the gig gain some momentum.
