Here it is, one of those forgotten gems of popmusic. Paradoxically, this record itself IS actually a collection of those forgotten gems of popmusic. Yo La Tengo released this little masterpiece in 1990 and never topped it (although 1997’s ‘I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One’ came pretty close). This is a cover album with some of Ira Kaplan’s (he’s the singer/guitarplayer of this three-piece combo) favourite tunes out of his extensive record collection. The artists are mostly obscure heroes of the last three decades, though a few well known names like the Kinks, John Cale and the Tremeloes can also be found. And this 16-track album is POP AS HELL!!!! This album comes pretty close to the ultimate popalbum, the tunes themselves are bloody timeless (they range from the sixties to the eighties) but all credit due to Yo La Tengo please, for making this record sound like a record with their own songs in their own style (although it sounds like nothing they ever did before). A lot of bands can learn something from how these guys made this album. They play and perform on this record with an accoustic and an electric guitar, an accoustic bass (you know, one of those beautiful huge things) and a sparsely used drumkit. All the instruments sound the same all the time, and that’s not boring but it gives merit to the sheer consistency of the ‘Fakebook’-sound. The most beautiful though are the divine voices of Georgia Hubley (especially hers!) and Ira Kaplan, they sing the whole thing with all the emotion and tenderness they possibly can get out of their human bodies. They surely send shivers down your spine singing all those classic songs pop you probably would have forgotten all your life if you hadn’t heard this record. Try to listen to the last song ‘What Can I Say’ and not feel happy, sad, strange, blissful and what other emotions at the same time. It’s such a simple song, it sounds like you’ve heard it before somewhere. This is what POP music can do to you, people! All of us wondered sometime where pop is gonna get us in life, especially nowadays with a different name for every kind of slight distinct in music, from speed-garage to emo-core. But after hearing this record, you’ll agree with me. POP rules!! After listening and loving all the songs on this loveable album, you just know you never want to hear the original song..., you’ll only be disappointed anyway.
