Jack White produced 'Lack Of Communication' and gave the band the opening spot on The White Stripes' sold out European tour. And we thank him for releasing this Detroit thoroughbred fury on an unsuspecting Europe. Primordial drum rolls, bass that makes the floor gulf, guitars drenched in fuzz and a singer that howls he's "Resurrected by demons / All shouting in my head". Although not as accessible as The White Stripes, The Von Bondies do display pop sensibilities. The best example is 'No Sugar Mama', a classic Tin Pan Alley style boy-girl call-and-answer duet with a Motown twist. The possibilities The Von Bondies' 2 girls/2 guys line-up gives for mixed vocals are here used at their fullest, but there are more tracks where guitarist Marcie Bolen's and bassist Carrie Smith's backing up of Jason Stollsteimer's classic howl are the icing on the cake. The main ingredients remain fuzzed out, scorching rock and a woman who seriously mistreated Stollsteimer. Apparently he loved her, but she loved her even more, if we have to believe such tracks as the absolute killer 'Lack Of Communication' ("Tear down the Mona Lisa / Put your picture on the wall / Tell the world you love her / And I'm at your beck and call") and Shallow Grave ("You cut off my lifelines, baby, to try and see if I'd fight"). And all the while the band's secret weapon, drummer Don Blum, keeps a rumble going that comes right from the heart of a Chevrolet car plant and forms the very heartbeat of this rock monster. With 'Lack Of Communication' The Von Bondies qualify solidly for the top of the Detroit rock scene right between The White Stripes and The Dirtbombs.
