Von Bondies: Part Of The Problem Or Part Of The Solution?

Trusty as a vintage Ford, but without the momentum.

Detroit was once famed for its booming car industry. It was also home of the MC5s and garage rock. The cars have long since rusted, but the Von Bondies still make stripped-down rock 'n' roll, as trusty as a vintage Ford.

No thrills are all the thrills you need. Like the White Stripes, they can holler and stomp their way through the blues with the best of them. Going Down does more than just grab the attention of this early morning festival crowd. It practically throttles them.

Looking like Meg and Jack White in double vision, they are a captivating four piece and every bit the uber-cool garage rock band. At least they would be if they could sustain the momentum for the full half hour. This is not necessary a bad thing; just not as good as it could be.

So in keeping with the MC5 manifesto, you have to ask yourself: Are they part of the problem or part of the solution? You had a whole weekend to decide.
