What to do when you have a second-hand record store and there are always some records noone wants to buy. And you're fascinated by the sounds around you. A stupid television show, a film, or the street noises... Liesbeth Esselink, better known as Solex, has provided the best solution. Since her debut album 'Solex vs. the Hitmeister' in 1998 she manages to cut and paste the best loops, beats, and miscellaneous sounds together, accompanied by her mysterious voice. This combination is so unique you can recognise a Solex song after listening to it for a few seconds, like if you've been taken into her small personal world, now also accessible for listeners. And that's also the case on the third album 'Low Kick and Hard Bop'. The music is just as cool as the song titles: 'Honey (Amsterdam is not LA)', 'The Dot on the I Between the H and the T', etc. The excessive drums on 'Not A Hoot' can easily go together with a sample of a running train, and on the album there is always space for a psychedelic intermezzo. But songs like 'Good Comrades Go To Heaven' and 'Shoot Shoot' (available to download on the Solex site - listen and you'll know what I mean) are even catchy as hell and will easily be carved into your mind. For the people who know Solex: She really did it again. For the people who don't know Solex: Listen to 'Low Kick and Hard Bop' and be surprised and taken away. At your service.
