Together with the soundtrack release Earphoria, the Smashing Pumpkins re-released the 1994 home video Vieuphoria on DVD and added some treats as extras. The "old" track listing provides the video to the live versions found on Earphoria, of which the totally spaced-out take of 'Disarm' from English TV show The Word, 'Slunk' from Japanese TV (complete with hilarious interview), and the smiling and laughing acoustic cut of 'Mayonaise' in the sun are quite remarkable, along with the London Astoria 'Silverfuck' as a very special punchline.
The interludes sew together the live performances and can be accessed separately. Weird and wacky bits of footage these are!: D'arcy playing with toys, a 'shrink' session for all four, a short take on Billy Corgan's first band the Marked, a Jimmy Chamberlin Up Close and Personal interview, and an introduction to the befriended band the Frogs. Just to name a few of the absolute highlights. These strange but funny bits are a nice counterpart to balance the amazing and thunderous, all-out rock performances.
Performances of 'Snail' and 'Siva,' both live in 1994 but unfortunately not during the1991–1992 Gish tour, provide great versions. Still, these are, all considered, apart from flaws in audio and video (this is DVD man!), gems worth buying this thing for. And the winning streak continues with the 1994 fast metal rocking version of 'I Am One,' now officially released for the first time. Another fast and furious take of the archetypal Pumpkins rock track 'Geek USA' is totally alright and all-out Pumpkin rock invasion. Special is the pair of 'Soma' and 'Hummer,' with cellist Eric Remschneider adding mellow and subdued underscores to the walls of guitar noise. Jaw-dropping stunner is the inclusion of 'Porcelina' (off 1995's Mellon Collie album) before 'Silverfuck.' This rather unknown, very early hint of the melody and vibe of the later epic makes up for the muting out of the 'Over the Rainbow' part during a standard (it has to be said) 'Silverfuck' (again due to copyright issues?).
This DVD offers a high quality version of the earlier VHS from 1994, adds little and too little, but carries some nice surprises, after all. For everyone to see — the 1994 state of the tremendous rock outfit, the Smashing Pumpkins. Let 's hope there will eventually be a DVD of the latter stages, and, of course, the Farewell Show of 2 December 2000 at Chicago's Metro. To soothe the wait, this DVD (and album) lets nostalgia rule. A little, at least.
