The fifth Smashing Pumpkins ('Pisces Iscariot' was actually a b-side compilation) is one of their strongest albums. Although the comparison with the masterpiece 'Siamese Dream' (1993) is made with every SP release, this time it’s close, very close...why? Well, when you listen to the album, you hear some great songs with a typical Pumpkin feeling: Billy’s voice and the well known hard and soft guitar differences. But there is more, the songs are in general blessed with a enormous drive. Jimmy Chamberlin switched the bottle for the drumsticks and that’s one of the main reasons why this album simply works. The songs on 'Adore' weren't bad at all, but the percussion was pure digital and that was one of the reasons why that album didn not work out. (The Arising tour was also one of their weakest...remember the poor Pinkpop performance).
So back to the album, 15 songs in total. Opener 'The Everlasting Gaze' was officially downloadable and is the perfect opener, a pure powerrock song with a chorus from heaven.
Other songs from the same category are 'Stand Inside Your Love', 'The Imploding Voice', 'Wound', the addictive 'Heavy Metal Machine' and the fantastic 'I Of The Mourning' (this song has a chorus which you will never forget).
The other songs are a bit slower, but never boring...or maybe 'Glass + The Ghost Children' , it’s a 11 minute concept which take the tempo all the way down to silence and blurry conversations.
But as I mentioned earlier, there isn't a weak point on this album, so Machina is the strongest release of the early millennium...
