Damn, you don't get to hear something like this every day. This is a record that you must hear. Interpol is a band from NYC (also the title of a track on the album) that sounds like a louder version of Joy Division. You might think that Interpol has got some connections with the band from NYC that dominated the world of rock last year: The Strokes. But, except from the use of the basic instruments, this is not the case. Where The Strokes stay up-tempo most of the time, Interpol has a darker side, like on Untitled and Hands Away. Singer Paul Banks sounds like he's hurt really bad in relationships: "She's always calling my bluff / She puts the weights into my little heart," in Obstacle 1, where you hear the tension in his voice. Or "I'm going to pull you in close / Going to wrap you up tight / Going to play with the brains that you came here with tonight," in Obstacle 2. Also, because of this, the atmosphere on the album is a threatening and claustrophobic one. Firm guitar riffs, melodic bass lines, and heavy drums, all excellently mixed. A thing you really notice when you compare it with some early Interpol singles they released in 2000. Turn On The Bright Lights is haunting and threatening, like it's the soundtrack for the Blair Witch Project — except for the fact that this time something really happens. So irresistible and dangerous that you can't help letting them grab you by the neck. Don't miss this.
