TKMYL recently received the new Caesar album in our snail-mailbox. It took some time for Dutch guitar-pop band Caesar to come up with some new stuff which caused some rumors about this album produced by Steve Albini. One of these rumors was that Caesar would return to the sound of the 'Clean' (their first album) era.
This definitely has not happened. Already from the first tunes on 'Leaving Sparks' it is clear that this album is a continuation of the 'artistic'-process started on 'No Rest For The (A)lonely'. But after 'Stellar Road' and 'Spain' (the first two songs) the unity of this album gets lost. The next ten songs are filled with experiments, some songs tend to be romantic due to the use of strings, others tend to be Spanish or more country-style.
The use of an organ sometimes adds a bit to the sound of the songs, but in most cases it works anoying. All this experimenting, is it caused by the influence the producer had? Could be, although Albini has a reputation of a 'record-as-performed' approach.
Altogether 'Leaving Sparks' is an interesting album, but it misses the nice melodic up-tempo songs which could turn out to be a disappointment for the fans who might expect the explosive Caesar-sound.
