It seems that the last couple of years the US is, musically, trying to flood us with bands that play either unimaginitive, thirdrate mtv-grunge- rock (hello Creed, Lit etc) or else try to sound like Rage Against The Machine (Korn, Limb Bizkit, etc), but if you dig a bit deeper, there is, luckily, more. Especially in the section that I like to call Psychedelic Pop things are getting really interesting and it's about time it gets some more attention. A couple of years ago, thanks to the jeans of Levi's, we met The Lily's and more recently there were the succes-albums of Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips. And, if you look carefully, there is a great number of bands stamping with impatience behind those three. Most of them, like the Apples In Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel and The Minders, can be categorised as part of the so-called Elephant 6-collective.
A more-a-state-of-mind-than-a-recordcompany orginating from Athens, Georgia whose prime admission requirement seems to be that you have to know the complete works of the Beach Boys and Beatles inside and out. San Fransisco's Beulah can also be counted as part of this whole Elephant 6-thing. And here, their second album, they sound like a cross between the afformentioned Lily's and Olivia Tremor Control. Great, slightly psychedelic, sixties-y guitarpop. Maybe a bit more 'woolly' than the Lily's and definitely more coherent than OTC though. And on top of that Beulah seem to be able to write the most beautiful songs imaginable: If We Can Land A Man On The Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart and Ballad Of The Lonely Argonaut and Score From Augusta and, well, to be honest, every song here is a warm, timeless near-perfect popsong. Songs full of strings and brass and windinstruments and piano's and organs but it still sounds so easy the way Beulah does it. What a great album.
