As part of the @lter 8 tour Zita Swoon played the last shows of 2001 as headline act supported by two rather unknown Dutch bands; Beef and Rosemary's Sons. Somewhere in the middle between Crowded House and Live with a little touch of U2 Rosemary's Sons showed some potential to become quite a popular soft-rock mainstream act. The ska-reggae sound of Beef is entertaining at first and played with a lot of energy and passion, but - as is the case with a lot of bands in this genre - fails to hold attention and interest.
After touring extensively this last year, promoting the new album " Life = A Sexy Sanctuary" and even opening for the megahit Muse on some dates, Zita Swoon played one of their last electric shows for some time to come. This year the band will come to theaters across the Benelux and Germany with an acoustic show following their live release: "Live at the Jet Studio, Brussels".
Tonight Zita Swoon had some very special treats in the set. Opening with two tracks off the debut album "Everyday I Wear a Greasy Black Feather on my Hat" the second one, the stunning " TV-song" defined this evening as not only disco-dancing tout-court.
A mix of songs from "I Paint Pictures on a Wedding Dress", " Plage Tattoo/Circumstances" and "Life = A Sexy Sanctuary" carried the set along the floor-filling highlights of the night: "My Bond with You and Your Planet: DISCO!", " The Bananaqueen" and " Spider Grinder". But the obscure b-sides " How Can I Resist Kissing Her on the Cheeks?" and "Ha Bi Bi Ouldi" made this performance very special. The bluesy/Tom Waits style songs dominated throughout, with the prime examples being "Ricochet" and "Love is a Heavy Brick".
Zita Swoon being the best specimen of the eclectic Belgian style, this show reflected all aspects of this blend of currents. Brought with the usual energy and determination and a keen eye for the visual aspect of their performance Zita Swoons set ranged between the extremes of a very wide spectrum, with something for everyone.
Zita Swoon played numerous gigs last year, is on the verge of breaking ground in the rest of Europe and still and again delivers a strong show with the best elements of rock, blues, funk and disco. With less emphasis on the danceable repertoire (the summerfestivals were true disco/party-shows), the Tivoli gig showed Zita Swoon as a true alternative superband. It is time for the rest of Europe to let the Moondog in!
