Amsterdam stonerrockers Beaver are personal friends of the Queens of the Stone Age. They even made a
split ep with them. This means that when QotSA play Amsterdam Beaver usually are the openers. And they
always suck. Not necessarily because their songs are bad. It is hard to say something about the quality
of their material because Beaver never play in time. In fact all four bandmembers seem to have their own
idea about the tempo at which should be played. And this time the band played only material from their
new album, no idea if it is any good, making it even worse. The resulting sound is better described with
'mud' than with 'rock'.
On record the Queens of the Stone Age's almost abstract rock, which combines the seemingly unmixable
genres of krautrock and psychedelic hardrock, already makes for one of the best and certainly most
original bands in current rock music. On stage they are even better. Sometimes. QotSA are one of those
rain or shine bands. And when singer/guitarist Josh Homme entered the stage looking like he just came out
of bed after having tried all drugs available in Amsterdam on the night before (later he made a remark
implying that was the case), dark clouds started gathering above the sold out Melkweg Max. Opening track
'Feel Good Hit Of The Summer' lived up to its name and managed to restore the meteorological situation
inside to the same one as outside. In stark contrast to Beaver, bass player Nick Oliveri and drummer Gene
Trautmann layed down a groove more than deserving of the 'robot rock' label the band likes to give to
their music. Brendan McNichol's pedal steel and keyboard added loads of atmosphere. And the number one
sign of a great QotSA concert was there: Josh Homme started walking around the stage making grimaces
during solos like only true master guitarists make them. All the best tracks of their both albums where
played, highlights being 'Better Living Through Chemistry', 'You Would Know', 'The Lost Art Of Keeping A
Secret' and the simply brilliant b-side 'You're So Vague'. The concert culminated in the last encore when
'I Can't Quit You Baby' was extended into a mind-blowing jam.
And the good news is the band will already return in August, hopefully with tracks from their new album
'Music for the Deaf' (besides one of the best, QotSA are also one of the hardest working bands in rock),
with noneless than Mark Lanegan as extra vocalist. In the meantime Beaver could start practising with a metronome.
