Does anyone remember the Serenes? Superb melodic guitar pop from the Netherlands that makes you dream of faraway places. Friesland for instance. I've never heard such beautiful music again until I played 'Disappearance of a Normal Man' by Venus Flytrap (The Hague, Netherlands) on my CD player. But it would be too easy to transcribe Venus Flytrap like some modern copy of the Serenes. Venus Flytap is much more modest, much more introvert, but also more cheerful. Although this CD came out in October last year it missed me for some dark reason. A pity, because 'This is Your Exit Plan' is a collection of pure pop songs. Sometimes extroverted, but mostly slow with melodic vocals and a combination of acoustic and electric instruments. That lack of diversity is my only critique on this record. The four are masters in making beautiful, slow pop songs, but with some more diversity the album as a whole would breathe more tension. But also without this tension the quality of the individual songs makes 'This is Your Exit Plan' worthwhile every minute.
