Tony Allen, He Who Banged the Drums in Fela Kuti's Africa 70 and thus became one of the two godfathers of afrobeat, is always looking for new sounds, new directions to take his music in, and with great success, too. The experimentalism on the Psyco on da Bus album (a collaboration with Doctor L.) and the Allenko Brotherhood project (a string of spearheading artists building tracks around the drummer's grooves) were excellent proof of that, as is his new album Homecooking.
Produced by UK hiphop outfit Unsung Heroes, the album sounds refreshing, exciting and definitely not like another Africa 70 imitation. A big part is played by Unsung Heroes rapper Ty: his vocals are featured in most of the songs alongside Tony's own which turns out to be a great combination, check Woman to Man and Jakelewah. More new sounds in Calling, a soulful slowdancer with Mary Lee and her husband Norman on vocals. The luscious strings are reminiscent of Soul II Soul and 4Hero. There is jazz-funk in What's Your Fashion, conscious lyrics in the uptempo groover HomeCooking, Kindness and Don't Fight, a cool fusion of pop, hiphop and afrobeat in Every Season (featuring vocals by Blur/Gorillaz' Damon Albarn and Ty), and straight up oldschool afrobeat in the aptly titled Crazy Afrobeat and the laidback closing track, Eparapo.
With Tony Allen doing the cooking, them belly full but we hungry for more.
