Sometimes it seems as if there hides a Will Oldham inside all of us. But this time it's not the artist formerly known as Will Oldham or Bonnie 'Prince' Billy who is playing hide and seek on this 20-minute disc. Let's cut right through it: The shaky voice behind Timesbold comes from Jason Merritt aka Whip, and it's obvious that he has seen a darkness too. Though it may not be that difficult to guess who has influenced Jason Merritt, I must also say that it would be unfair to just accuse him of plagiarizing his hero. But, yet again, it's simply impossible to review 'Woe Be Gone...' without mentioning Mr. Oldham. Having said that, any discerning listener will clearly notice that Timesbold's creations seem to find their own way rather than someone else's. Captured here on an EP are five post-modern folksongs: 'Gin I Win', Lorili', 'This Field Needs a Reaper', 'Evil', and the finest cut on this brief disc, 'I Hear You Hear'. What's missing in the liner notes of 'Woe Be Gone...' is that there is some experimenting with such unusual instruments as pump organ, mellotron, optigan, bowed bass, bowed saw, harmonium, mandolin, hurdy gurdy, orchestral bells, and a baby drum kit. It was a wonderful experience to see Timesbold playing live at the Crossing Border festival and doing a show for VPRO radio in Amsterdam. Their experimenting keeps the quiet songs from sinking into monotonous moments, and if they continue to do so, things are going to be just fine.
