Brother and sister duo Jack and Meg White offer us 16 timeless classics made of the best simple ingredients. The melody often seems ripped right from a children's song ('We're Going to be Friends' actually is a children's song.), a quality they have in common with Paul McCartney. And Tony Iommi himself could have written some of the riffs on this album (Just listen to 'Expecting' or 'Aluminum'.). Not since Nirvana has there been a band that combined these elements, catchy melodies and Black Sabbath riffs, as well as The White Stripes. And yes, The White Stripes do sound a bit like Nirvana; they just stripped away that classic rock sound Butch Vig gave to 'Nevermind'. Just listen to that album and 'White Blood Cells' back-to-back. There have been a lot of bands where it was said that they brought rock back to its pure essence. The White Stripes actually do it on 'Little Room': just a drum beat and vocals, 48 seconds long. And it rocks like a Mondriaan boogie woogie. Now you know why their previous album was called 'De Stijl'. The lyrics deal with twisted relationships like they're supposed to do in rock'n'roll: You only have to hear Jack claim that, "it can't be love, for there is no true love" and then hear him wail a few seconds later that, "you gotta love me" on 'The Union Forever' to be reminded that being an adolescent is hard. And although 'White Blood Cells' is "all killer, no filler", there is one track that is the primus inter pares. 'Fell in Love with a Girl' plugs right into the brain stem and will make you move uncontrollaby for it's entire 1:48. "She says come and kiss me by the riverside / Bobby says it fine, he don't consider it cheating."
