I must refrain myself from writing only in superlatives this time. Readers won't accept a description like "a beautiful, brilliant, overwhelming, addictive piece of work." Is it important to them that, when I put this album in my player, I couldn't listen to anything else for a long time? I guess people who knew the Delgados all along are already convinced after some of these statements. But there are still people out there who have never heard music made by this Scottish band. To be honest, I want to convince them. Because the Delgados have already made some (fill in your own superlative) albums, which steadily became more orchestrated, resulting in the Mercury Prize nominee The Great Eastern. But on Hate, they've become perfectionists, as if they were working towards the "real" Delgados sound all along and now made the "real" Delgados album. And yes, there is a lot of resemblance with The Great Eastern, only this time there is even more attention to the musical compositions. In other words, the term "soundtrack" pops up in your mind more than once. Especially on 'Woke From Dreaming' you hear the progress, where a choir sings towards a bombastic climax in the middle of the song, until there is nothing left but the leading piano tune and the voice of Emma Pollock. What's still the same about the Delgados is the striking combination of harmonious music and negative lyrics. It's strange that such a beautiful album is called Hate, but that's normal for the Delgados. 'All You Need Is Hate ' sounds like they are reading a sort of manual about the importance of hate for society, and, still, it's also an uplifting song. Lyrics like "Life isn't precious and life isn't sacred / Sometimes relief only comes when you meet death" don't necessarily make the music depressive. The accent of the Delgados is convincingly on the compositions, the way a song turns out to be. On Hate, it always turns out to be towards perfection. The sound is dressed with a full string section, with which they dare to take ordinary rock music a step higher. To work towards a voluminous outburst, where everything comes together. Superlatives alert! Now it's time to stop convincing and describing, and leave it all up to you, the reader. From here, I wish you a lot of fun with Hate.
