When Cinematic Orchestra released their debut album Motion in 1999, people were flabbergasted. Beautiful, jazzy, and orchestral music seemingly written especially for films (without this actually being the case) — and on a très cool label like Ninja Tune! It was almost too good to be true. Having started as a project of ex-Ninja J. Swinscoe, Cinematic Orchestra have since grown to be a real band, with Swinscoe and bassist Phil France as composers. The music hasn't suffered from it. It still sounds filmic, albeit less than on Motion. At times dreamy, at times epic, it's a beautiful landscape painted with guitars, drums, strings, samples, and double bass. This time the band has reached out for vocal help to the legendary American singer Fontella Bass, who had a gigantic hit in 1965 with Rescue Me and can be heard on All That You Give and Evolution, and to British rap hero Roots Manuva, who sings his inflammatory lyrics on All Things To All Men. Everyday is an aptly titled album: You just have to hear it at least once a day.
