The heavy metal scene is mostly dominated by two big record labels: Nuclear Blast and Century Media. The next best thing in the business is Roadrunner Records, home to bands like Type O Negative, Slipknot, and Life Of Agony. Roadrunner Records is also the motor behind the Roadrage package tour that is visiting Europe, end of 2002.
In honor of that tour, which features bands Killswitch Engage, 5 Pointe O, and 36 Crazyfists, a Roadrage DVD has also been released, showcasing the best of today's and yesterday's bands on the Roadrunner label.
This DVD contains videos of twenty(!) different acts under contract with Roadrunner. The musical styles featured on Roadrage range from hardcore and thrash metal to (neo)grunge and gothic. However, the majority of the bands are nu-metal bands (or whatever sub-sub-sub-variations have developed from that particular musical direction).
And this brings me to the major flaw of Roadrunner Records (and of the entire nu-metal scene): How on Earth are people supposed to tell these bands apart if they all sound and/or look the same? Just put your DVD player on "random play," and you'll get my point.
All you see is guys with dreadlocks and lots of piercings, bouncing around your TV screen, and a singer that's rapping half of the time and screaming his lungs out the other half (but if you're lucky, sometimes he even sings!). And if you put the DVD box aside, you simply won't have a clue as to which band you're watching.
The only acts that stand out from the majority (either by look or by sound) are the ones that have already made it big, like Nickelback, Type O Negative, Slipknot, and Fear Factory. (Gee, do you think there could be a connection?)
Still, if you're interested in what makes today's kids tick (or if you ARE one of them), you won't be disappointed by this DVD. Even though the disc doesn't contain any DVD-extras (not even Dolby sound!), its twenty tracks and playing length of well over 76 minutes definitely makes the Roadrage DVD a nice buy.
