No, I didn't like this album immediately. It took some time and effort. Reason for this is probably the lack of conventional song structures in songs and melodies where you expect nothing more than just that. Reiziger use beautiful and transparent guitar chords and strong vocal melodies. And then they combine it into something that doesn't sound catchy. When you first realise this it's easy to dismiss this album as "close, but no cigar", thinking the album lacks good songs. But no, it's not that easy, that is if you're willing to put some effort into 'My Favourite Everything'. After some time you discover the logic in the song structures, you don't mind the absence of catchy choruses anymore, and that's when the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. It's not easy to pinpoint their sound exactly, but in the interview they mentioned Pixies, Slint, and Fugazi. This is not a copy of those bands, but Reiziger's mixture of Pixies pop melodies combined with uncoventional Fugazi structures is a strong one. And when it is blended with emotional Slint-inspired guitar parts, it all comes together beautifully. Oh, and 'This song is Killing Me' sounds just like Husker Du! Just had to mention that. Unfortunately, the album isn't the masterpiece it could have been. One of their strongest points on the stage are the dynamics, and this doesn't always show on the album. Furthermore, they decided to put the song 'My Favourite Anything' on, which is a remix by Belgian band Deny, in which they use various pieces from various songs from the album. Not bad, but it doesn't fit between all of the down-to-earth guitar songs. But even when you skip that song, there are eight others that convince totally. Maybe not immediately, but still...
