Trent Reznor’s long-awaited new effort, his latest full-on record in 5 years, a double-album, obviously has a lot riding on it. Could he still capture the imagination like he did in ’95? He singlehandedly put industrial back on the map during the first half of the ‘90’s and the acts he helped get a larger audience (resp. Marilyn Manson and Rammstein) have reached or even surpassed the status he had when The Downward Spiral was winding down. Except for the odd soundtrack or collaboration things have been eerily quiet around Reznor.
Time had passed, and the pressure was on to make a big record. The Fragile is in fact two records; a great album with outstanding production and good songs (CD1) and a collection of what could’ve been well made B-sides (CD2). As a whole album it doesn’t really work, CD2 just doesn’t live up to what CD1 achieves in grandeur, tension, musical concept and even songwriting (not one of Reznor’s strongest traits). The fact that for every format (CD, cassette & LP) he’s got different new songs and sequences is therefore not justifiable either.
Musically he has evolved a little. It’s still very NIN. But there are more traditional instruments and even a nice attempt at big beat (Complication), while lyrically things haven’t changed too much. He’s still clinically depressed.
The production is in one word supernatural, every sound is well filtered, proportioned and layered. A wonder in engineering.
The final analysis? An overdose on the perfect drug is still an overdose.
