Alongside the highly anticipated live album (available on 2 formats), Nine Inch Nails has released its visual companion. This double-disc DVD set, packaged in a beautiful, minimalist box containing a small, transparent insert with a personal note by Trent Reznor, brings back the memories of a stunning world tour.
Filmed during the Fragility v. 2.0 tour in the US, the shows are different from the one I witnessed in Europe. Probably due to the arena size of the venues, the beamer and screen approach of the video art was replaced by a triptych of huge LCD panels hung above the band and used as additional lighting during the first part of the show. When the set list approached the time when Bill Viola's video art was to be performed, the panels came down and rotated to a vertical position. The effect of the enormous light show — with tons of strobes combined with the beautifully shot and crafted visuals by Viola, symbolically matching the music's feelings — was absolutely the best I've ever seen in a live performance.
The performances on the DVD are taken from archives of several shows, but edited to run like one solid gig. Reznor and Co. also worked on the mix to create a pounding surround feeling in the living room. Still, some of the hall boom and echo is there, which leads to an ambivalent feeling: It does add some depth and live atmosphere to the insanely precise music, but I wouldn't mind an even tighter-sounding recording. This, however, is pushed to the background by the annoying inclusion of the crowd noise from the 10,000+ capacity attendances. As far as I am concerned, the cheers are okay in-between songs; but during the more hushed moments of the most intimate parts of the set list, the ambient mics need to be muted out of the final sound mix. Let the music do the talking!
With some awesome, multi-camera angle shots, mesmerizing video art, and a band at its absolute best, this double DVD is every Nine Inch Nails fan's dream coming true. This set also has some nice extras: a monologue by Bill Viola on his video art, a tour picture gallery, and some well-hidden bonus features too. These include: a performance of Starfuckers, Inc. with Marilyn Manson and Twiggy, a live version of Reptile, some promotional videos, and an alternate live video for The Day The World Went Away. As always, it was a long wait before The Fragile was released. The album did live up to, and surpass, all expectations, and the tour even managed to push the limit more. Now, with the audio and video of the Fragility Tour available, we can start the new long wait for the follow-up album, reliving this highlight of fin de siècle industrial rock. Nine Inch Nails is the best, and it shows: overwhelming, dramatic, powerful, raw, and subtle. An emotional rollercoaster ride between Terrible Lie and Hurt, between heaven and hell and back again.
