William Shakespeare once said "To rock or not to rock, that is the question. Whether it is nobler to enjoy the genius and wonder of Neutral Milk Hotel. Or by avoiding it, missing out."
Well, maybe he didn't. But when he had listened to 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea', he would have cried and smiled at the same time while clutching the beautiful recordcover. What else can you do when hearing 'In the Aeroplane Over The Sea'? Neutral Milk Hotel is part of the Elephant Six pack which put their love for the Beatles on vinyl and CD. But where Olivia Tremor Control and company sound clearly influenced by sixties pop music, Neutral Milk Hotel have a sound that is out of this world. 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea' is the follow-up to 'On Avery Island', a record that didn't tingle my ears as much. But it already gave us an idea of Jeff Mangum's songwriting.
Should one make comparisons when you are confronted with this piece of magical music? I guess you have to because I might as well be talking about Public Enemy. Which isn't the case at all. 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea' has been put on the same level as Guided By Voices' 'Bee Thousand'. In a way it is. Making the most out of what you have got, namely great songwriting, without using a 2462157 track-studio. Just check out the words to 'Two Headed Boy' and 'Oh Comely'. But also using odd instruments. What the hell is a zanzitophone and euphonium? Who cares, it sounds wonderful. Jeff Mangum's voice is just as expressive as Will Oldham's vocal chords. Maybe not perfect but emotionally it conveys so much. I admit that sometimes it is too much for my ears to take. Too wonderful. A piece of magic for a handful of dollars, I wouldn't think twice about it. Nor should you.
