Millencolin and No Fun At All have always been the most prominent bands of
the
Swedish punk/hardcore label Burning Heart. And they've been playing quite
some
years now and even experienced the so-called second punk wave. Green Day and
Offspring opened the gates and even the schoolkids were dying their hair
green.
It resulted in a lot of attention for punk rock bands playing fast, melodic
tunes
in the tradition of Bad Religion. Most of the music was very replaceable, but
some bands were as original as they were strong, like NoFX, Voodoo Glow Skulls and
Millencolin.
At that very time Millencolin had released their second album
Life
On A Plate, containing not only fast, catchy songs but also a lot of ska, like in the
single Story Of My Life.
Years went on and a lot of bands started to repeat themselves, and disappeared
after
some time; but Millencolin can always count on a lot of appreciation because
of
the variation in songs on their strong releases, For Monkeys and
Pennybridge Pioneers, which even went gold in Australia. Their new one, Home From Home, adds another high-quality
piece of work to their discography.
Press
"play," and the party starts, yeah yeah yeah. Opener Man Or Mouse will surely please audiences at their live gigs,
which total over a hundred after every album release, hence the album title.
The band decided to put Black Eye and Kemp on the album even though they released a version of them before.
Excellent choice: They are more
worked
out and are the strong parts. Fingers Crossed resembles the sound of the early
Millencolin albums, having very personal lyrics. No politics, but stories
about the person who inspired singer Nikola Sarcevic to listen to
punk rock (Punk Rock Rebel), and a protest of the strong people who try to
bring down
the weak (Afghan). Nice melodies, good mixing (thank you producer Lou
Giordano), variation in guitar effects: It will be hard to beat Millencolin
this year in making the punk rock album-of-the-year.
