Whuuuhwhuh. A heavily distorted bass guitar plays two notes. Just two notes. The drummer strikes a beat. A no-wave guitar joins in, grating as desert sand. A man declares, as if he is a five-year-old bragging to the neighbour's kid, "My love is better than your love. We take more drugs than a touring funk band. Sing it!" Whuuuhwhuh. The bass player is not impressed. He still responds with the same two notes — still. Then, all of a sudden, the singer, and with him the entire band, explode. "And we're all going straight to hell!" Within seconds he gets a grip on himself and is bragging again: "My dad is bigger than your dad. He's got eight cars and a house in Ireland. Sing it!" Whuuuhwhuh, goes the bass.
To Hell With Good Intentions, the third single taken from Mclusky Do Dallas, is mainly that: a single. A simple, catchy hook, but with enough thorns to remain interesting, and above all, with great shout-along potential. Sing it! The same can be said about all 14 songs on Mclusky Do Dallas.
The Mclusky recipe? Take one killer riff, either Pixies or Birthday Party style. Add a simple but strong bass line, preferably played with lots of fuzz distortion. Let the drummer propel all this at mid-tempo. Finish it off with bizarre one-liners by a singer whose sneer is scaringly reminiscent of John Lydon's. And once you start a song with the lyric "Secret führers got your tongue and bitches got your car / And if it wasn't for the '86 World Cup, it wouldn't have got this far," not much can go wrong.
And when everybody has shouted their throat sore, Mclusky step on the brake and tell you to Fuck This Band. "Cos they swear too much / It's an obvious ploy and irresponsible / Fuck this band, yeah fuck their holes / But if they split up, you're responsible." And we don't want that to happen so soon after they release one of the best records of the year. So, sing it!
