Lou Barlow is a willful man. For years his band Sebadoh has rocked the indie scene with garage-y punk and beautiful pop songs. As Sentridoh, he has released some impressive collections of his, mostly acoustic home recordings. And with Folk Implosion, he introduced beats and samples as a surplus value to his experimental approach in making music. Now Lou is into making web pages.
Loobiecore.com reads like a personal diary. Lou tells you about his everyday life: taking his father-in-law to the airport, about his cat Hector's cat-astrophes, and of course about his music. Next to stories about touring and recording sessions, he makes it possible to download some rare songs from his personal collection — "Poorly recorded and played" (his own description), in his well-known lo-fi approach.
The first collection of 23 songs that were available on Loobiecore.com is now compiled on a self-released CD bearing the title Free Sentridoh, Songs From Loobiecore. Although previous Sentridoh compilations were not always very listenable because of their unbalanced combination of friendly and idiotic songs, this CD does maintain a very constant pleasant atmosphere. The songs are, like his home page, about Lou's everyday life. His simple way of describing intimate situations is again fascinating; it makes you feel like a bystander. For instance, None Of Your Goddam Bizness, I Love My Momma, and On The Face tell beautiful personal stories about childhood, family, and love. But Don't Call Me Writer, a cynical song about how describing feelings can be a struggle, proves that being able to write beautiful, intimate songs isn't that self-evident. Luckily, Lou can always fall back upon hilarious nonsense talk in songs like Rehole and Spacescape Imagination Station. Altogether a nice casual collection of great songs — thanks for sharing it Loob!
You can get this CD in the merch table section of Loobiecore.com, and if you ask nicely, Lou's even willing to sign it for you.
