Kane is - at the same time - the most popular and the most hated rock band of the Netherlands. The fans can mostly be found in the teenage girl department, whereas everybody who considers himself a "serious music fan" hates the band. In short, a status similar to that of Creed in the US... Singer Dinand Woesthoff even has that same "hot potato in the throat"-style of singing. Kane, however, are not a grunge-lite band, although their music does contain some Pearl Jam influences. Songwriter Woesthoff's main inspiration seems to come from big 80s rock like U2 and Simple Minds, maybe even some Queensrÿche. 'So Glad You Made It', the band's sophomore effort, is filled with power-ballads with semi-acoustic intros that develop into unbridled bombast, with all tracks used for clever little effects and ideas. The band claim there are dance influences, but a computer beat here and an ornamental sample there do not result in "dance influences". Maybe those influences are the lack of guitars, because all of Kane's three (!) guitarists are mixed in very softly. Overall, the production is way too slick, and 'So Glad You Made It' is anything but a pop album. Maybe that is Kane's general problem: Everything about the album is extremely polished and perfectly done, but there is a definite lack of feeling (speaking of retro 80s...). And not only does Woesthoff emotionally hide behind his pathos and all those tricks and gadgets, it also makes him end up with a bunch of seven-minute-or-more tracks that lack hooks. 'So Glad You Made It' drags so much in places that you start to think that the title congratulates the listener who makes it through the entire album in one sitting. Kane are way too talented for us write them off on the basis of this one album. After all, the second album is always the hardest. But next time more of that talent should be used for writing good songs with catchy hooks, instead of decorating them to death. Until that we prefer listening to The White Stripes' two-minute songs, which, although played on only one guitar and one simple drumkit, are catchy as hell.
