Jeff Mills has been spoiling us this year: two volumes of his 'Every Dog Has Its Day' project, two episodes in the still exciting Purposemaker story, 3 or so ep's from mothership Axis plus the masterful 'Lifelike' compilation. And to round up the millenial year in style he serves us his personal interpretation of Fritz Lang's mute 20ies movie 'Metropolis'. Truth be told, Mills's output has always had that cinematic approach. His X-projects and many of his Axis works have constantly produced soundscapes that, in opposition to the bulk of his technopeers, mirror mysteriously unknown, utopian landscapes and his thoroughly thought-over philosophies and concepts. To cut a long story short: the man's one of the few artists on Planet Techno who's trying to tell us something. But is the music any good? Of course it is: apart from the beautiful ambient intro's and interludes, the ep also contains the dreamy, fairytale-like 'Perfecture' and the more dancefloor orientated 'Keeping of the kept', the song Surgeon is trying to make for years now. Another masterpiece from a man who keeps on reinventing himself and -God beware!- it even has a message. And on top of all this it's -again- more than tastefully packaged. The full cd is out on Tresor very soon.
