Unlike many other 80s superstars, Human League have been active for almost 23 years. Producing a record every four or five years. Acting somewhere in the borders of the contemporary pop music landscape. Time has changed. Together with the soon-to-come New Order album, 'Secrets' is one of the most discussed albums this summer, after bands like Zoot Woman and Ladytron stated Human League to be one of their heroes. Human League as old and new leaders of the 80s movement? Yes and no. 'Secrets' is a surprisingly good album. Songs like 'All I Ever Wanted', 'Love Me Madly?', 'The Snake', and especially 'Sin City' sound like a perfect mix of old electropop and modern dance music. Joyful tracks with a dark edge and great vocals by Philip Oakey and sweet chords by Susan and Joanne. Sounding not too complicated, but arranged and produced very well by Toy. But, aside from a few moments, Human League aren't able to equal their former brilliant work. 'Secrets' contains no new real classics. But then again, Human League are already one of the few shapers of contemporary pop. 'Secrets' is just a nice sunny album with hit potential. So let's smile and dance.
