Poor John Garcia. He gets famous as the singer of a band that is famous for its long instrumental band. And when the songwriter/guitarist of that band decides he wants to switch to a more song-oriented approach, he also decides he wants to sing himself. Exit Garcia. Garcia then tries to continue his career with Slo Burn and later Unida, but those bands have all kinds of label and lineup problems. And what they bring out is always compared, unfavorably, to that of his former band and the new band of the guitarist, who is often hailed as the future of rock 'n' roll. And all this while Garcia is a really good singer.
And the same goes again for Hermano. It is neither Kyuss nor Queens Of The Stone Age, because those are of course the bands that are the albatrosses 'round Garcia's neck. Hermano does sound a lot like a more down-to-earth, faster-rocking Kyuss. Garcia gets ample opportunity to showcase his vocal skills, the rhythm section of Dandy Brown and Steve Earle — formerly of the Afghan Whigs, making Hermano a semi-supergroup — lays down a fat groove, and David Angstrom and Mike Callahan make their guitars buzz like vacuum cleaners on LSD. With songs like Landetta (Motherload) and The Bottle, Hermano is probably the best Kyuss imitation I've heard so far. Sorry, John. Okay, maybe Alone Jeffe hints towards Alice In Chains, and 5 To 5 has a Ritchie Blackmore riff (and Garcia sounding like Ronnie James Dio completes the Rainbow feel). And those are fine songs too. Happy now?
