Spoken word CD's are always difficult. You can't play them while studying, reading, drinking and talking with your friends or while vacuuming your house or doing your dishes. It forces you to do absolutely nothing and listen. I, for one, am too restless to sit through a spoken word. But when I take the time and listen, I always discover a nice CD to listen to. I had this encounter with a live-CD from Tom Waits, and now again with 'A Rollins In The Wry' by Henry Rollins. The hardcore icon first started recording his ideas and experiences as spoken word albums in 1987 ('Big Ugly Mouth') and released up to ten spoken word albums till now. And the fans of Rollins know what to expect; sharp observations, crazy anecdotes and no beating around the bush. But it never gets offending or corny. There is always a dose of intellect in his pondering. On this CD Henry Rollins talks about poetry recitals, boobjobs, guys wearing makeup and a tour through Germany. I personally like the part he talks about Clinton and language ('Clintonese' and 'Language') and future parents listening to Slayer and KMFDM in 'Future Parents' the most. But everybody has to listen for himself, because somehow everybody can relate to what Rollins says. And while listening, try to pay attention to the guy laughing at Rollins' new-wave jokes. Either he hates it, or he was a Goth himself.
