Green Day: Million-album-selling punk-rock boys with hit singles like 'Basket Case' and 'When I Come Around' from their most appreciated and most selling album 'Dookie' in 1994. They made kids dye their hair green, but the die-hard punkers knew it: This isn't punk anymore. The "to be punk or not to be punk" discussion returned in every interview with the boys, and singer Billy Joe explained why they really were punk and always tried to say very controversial things. About other bands, about other people, almost about everything. This resulted in quite disappointing albums like 'Insomniac' and 'Nimrod'. But 'Nimrod' also had some space for new influences which resulted in the two best songs of the album and the best Green Day songs so far: 'Hitchin' A Ride' with violin and the ballad(!) 'Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)'. Now, three years later, Green Day isn't punk at all, they are not punk rock anymore. They are a pop band. The new album 'Warning:' contains twelve high-quality songs with an astonishing variety. We have polka in 'Misery' (great lyrics), a new emotional balled called 'Macy Day Parade' ("'cause I'm thinking 'bout a brand new home/the one I've never known"), and let's all sing along with the classy single 'Minority'. And Green Day proves that it's still possible to write catchy uptempo songs like 'Church on Sunday' and 'Fashion Victim'. But the album is quite a change compared to the former releases: It's much more interesting. Great songs, that's simple. It's time to congratulate them with their best and also daring album. Unexpected.
