California's own bad taste, fuzz fueled rockers return with their sixth record. 'California Crossing' is the title. So what else can we expect besides the visionary of B-movies like Vanishing Point or Devil's Angels, AC/DC styled fuzzed riffs and the ultimate Easy Rider feeling? Well, tons more. 'California Crossing' symbolises The Big Change. Fu Manchu have now found the ultimate combination of hard rocking and groovy guitar riffs and a commercial guideline in their songs. Fans of the early Fu Manchu may think other things, but I personally think that this album is just as good as 'In Search Of' ('96) and 'The Action is Go' ('98). Songs like 'California Crossing', 'Ampin'' and 'Downtown In Dogtown' make clear that nothing has changed since the early years when commercialism was still a curse-word for Fu Manchu. Not hidden, but lying openly between the more old style songs are the commercial songs with high hit potential like opener 'Separate Kingdom' and 'Thinkin' Out Loud'. This record is the ultimate college radio dream. Fu Manchu will likely make it, because 'California Crossing' is such a perfected and honest album. The band never tries to hide its goals and intensions on this record and I give them credibility for that. Answer the Big Question yourself and buy 'California Crossing': the purchase will be worth the cost.
