Winner of the audience award at Holland's Grote Prijs van Nederland, the prestigious talent showcase battle, and gigging through a solid 85 shows in a year's time, Face Tomorrow follows up their first release, an EP by the name of Live The Dream, with this debut full length album. In a branch of contemporary rock music where originality isn't very common, as the once underground movement now called emo has clearly been suffering from uniformity, Face Tomorrow shows a strong link to the mainstream of alternative rock, instead of the typical emo aspects of anguished lyrics sung in falsetto voice, with white noise guitar distortion.
Face Tomorrow's combination of At-The-Drive-In explosions of true emo and Radiohead melodies isn't spectacularly original, but at least it's more than we can say of their emo colleagues. Hard to pinpoint in one genre, Face Tomorrow's "indie" rock sounds ready for the big-time breakthrough. Solid production and proficient playing, with nice twists and turns to keep things interesting, superb artwork and packaging; Face Tomorrow put a lot of effort into this impressive release. And it shows!
This debut reveals loads of potential and presents a band that Holland can be proud of. A little less obvious referencing and an even more original interpretation of the standardized emo idiom could do no harm and should bring even more respect to one of the best rock bands from the Netherlands. Face Tomorrow clearly has a promising future!
