A great percentage of the time EPs are merely filler between albums, however, once in a great while they are flare guns. They signal to those looking that "Hey, something is changing, be on guard." The first such EPs that come to mind are Big Black's first couple, which showed certain growth. Also, sadly, Brainiac's final release Electro-Shock For President, which showed that this band was on to something big.
Such may be the case for Oakland post punkers Erase Errata. It appears that leaps and bounds have been made from last year's stellar debut Other Animals (Troubleman Unlimited). Herky-jerky, danceable rhythms bedrocked razor thin and unpredictable guitar lines-all the while seemingly ranting, stream of consciousness lyrics found there way into your head and wouldn't leave. The group garnered a lot of comparisons to the Slits, but in a good way.
The Numbers record finds these girls growing and expanding in interesting new ways. The tracks "Goin' Insane," and "Palo Alto," couple rubbery dance beats with unintelligibly distorted vocals and erratic laser beam guitars. I have never wanted to dance the robot as bad as the first time I listened to these tracks.
The final two numbers showcase a more focused side of the band. The tracks "Retreat, The Most Familiar, Extensive, I Bet!," and Thief Detests the Criminal," showcase an exciting side of this band. "Most Familiar…," turns springy bass lines into slippery ones in the course of the song, while the usual dashes of angular guitar are peppered throughout. The lyrics are clearer and very direct.
The final track "Thief…," is part political, anti-police rant-part head bobbing rhythm riot. Mellow, bop heavy rhythms find a contrast in the spastic, bursting guitar lines.
Erase Errata may not have intended this release to become a teaser for their next album, but with challengingly original song material such as this it is hard not to wonder what this band has up its sleeves.
