For their latest album, recorded between Vienna, London, Istanbul and Toscana, the duo got in the studio with their own fathers, both jazz-musicians in their own time. So get ready for a nostalgic and cosmopolitan adventure that includes the Afro-Cuban percussion of Sammy Figueroa, a Turkish string ensemble and a lot of smokey female vocals. Things kick off in style with the swinging piano of the unspeakably groovy Stiff Jazz, that already got a separate 12" release and rightly so. The lazy Basmati continues the playful, nonchalant atmosphere with a misty scat by the lovely Daniela. Next is the unlikely but nasty combination of bombastic Turkish strings and a funky horn-section taking the form of Ford Transit. The hysterical Sliding Heat can only be described as Ragga disco, while the fragile Drophere is a beautiful piano-ballad. But there is more. Where's Johnny Sabatino baths in a cool cinema noir ambiance and contains brooding nocturnal sounds and a soul-slicing trumpet bit. The click-tech undertones of vibe-fantasy Deep Kitsch are riskily but gloriously paired with cheeky strings. Airport is another Turkish-inspired track, this time in an electro-funk vein and it is a fine example of what we like to call Big City Music. And J-J-Jazz rears its head again on the sunny Dundadeova. Things are slowly moving towards their end with the swampy Thrill, sporting the big emotions with Björk-style vocals against a decadent eastern backdrop and, lastly, the atmospheric exotic wanderings of the tongue-in-cheek Gutenmorgenduft close off this big adventure on a light-hearted note. Gran Riserva is a cool and ironic musical trip around the world. You can count us in for the next journey, gentlemen. Excellent!
