dZihan & Kamien | Freaks & Icons

Freaks & Icons is the debut album by dZ & K who used to collaborate as MC Sultan (for example with "Jewel of the day" on "The Eclectic Sound of Vienna II"). Nowadays they are operating under their own names. With their mixed Yugoslavian, Swiss, German-Italian background they fit in smoothly in the eclectic Vienna music scene ending up with an album which can best be described as a Mediterranean-eastern variant of the jazzy sound of their more famous Viennese colleagues Kruder & Dorfmeister. The album was mainly created in San Remo (Italy), London, Istanbul & Vienna. Listening to the album I'm sure they had a very relaxing time in San Remo making me dream of sitting at a moonlighted Mediterranean beach midst of night having the right companion and drinks nearby and with Freaks & Icons as the background soundtrack. Assuring me that i'm not alone in this, is the appearance of "Homebase" on Jos� Padilla's "Caf� del Mar, vol. 6". "Homebase" itself is a very trippy track with its hypnotic piano loops, eastern darbuka percussion and some subtle kaval-flute sounds.
The album contains 13 tracks of which almost half was already released on the first two dZ & K 12 inches: "Code: no pork please" & "(b)efore (a)fter" but there is still enough new music left to discover. Apart from the electronic gear dZ & K uses eastern instruments hollo, drabuka, kaval & balaban complementary to the more traditional bass and drums. They start the album with a dancefloor orientated track "After" after which they reduce the bpm's directly to a lower level. This album goes from floorfillin' material (after, I guess she') over Mo-Waxean beats (streets of istanbul, slowhand hussein) to trippy atmospheric stuff (before, homebase) and hypnotic vocal tracks ( just you & I, colores, smile).
This album is the perfect prep for the summer season to come but has at the same time a limited storage life so enjoy it before this year's sunny period is over.
