What do I like about Barsuk Records' Death Cab For Cutie, besides the name? The thickly layered backdrop of sound that accentuates the storytelling, sickly sweet vocals, leaving me floored. I rarely listen to a disc the first time through without some sort of track fast-forwarding or rewinding. In most cases, I am searching for that one diamond in the rough that makes my investment in indie rock worth the cash I dropped. This disc was all I expected, and a bag of the saltiest and vinegar-iest chips on the planet, too. The fact of the matter is that I listened to this disc all the way through multiple times without a single complaint. I have since started to search for specific tracks based on the position of the moon, level of drunkenness, and length of road trip, but the truth remains: The Photo Album has the potential to kick the asses of millions.
This Death Cab effort has weaved an array of emotions and different vibes together in one tight, ten-song package. Ben Gibbard writes some of the most outstanding stories I have heard, and he then bends them to fit into that little plastic square for our pleasure. I am completely intrigued when I listen to Styrofoam Plates: Ben paints a picture of a poor, single-parent family through the eyes of a young boy who grows into a man. His lyrics are so bittersweet . . . "It's no stretch to say you were not quite a father / But a donor of a seed to a poor single mother that would raise us alone / We never saw the money / It went down your throat through the hole in your belly." The tracks go from introspective, melancholy beats to intense, head-nodding guitar riffs. I could only compare them to a mix of Bjork, Beck, and Bright Eyes.
I am getting tired of listening to bands because they are critically acclaimed by the indie rock masses. In some cases, we go through all the effort of selling crack, or stripping, for the cash to see a show, and then we find out that they're just hype. You have probably heard of Death Cab For Cutie, and you have probably thought about listening to them, but then stopped for the same reason that I did: You are tired of the jet-setting scene bands. Everyone goes to check them out at the club because everyone is going to check them out — it's the hot spot of the night. Screw that. Go check out The Photo Album, because it is dope, and the scene can go lick a hot frying pan.
