With the current compilation contamination and digitalized DJ sets dealt out by the dozens, it can be a joy to go back in time (1995, to be precise) and take a listen to when all this madness began. So, fittingly, Journeys By DJ decided to re-release Coldcut's legendary 70 Minutes Of Madness. Apart from the enormous sum of tracks — 35 — mixed up by the masters themselves, a multitude of styles flash by you without ever getting on your nerves. We heard reggae and ragga, a lot of early drum 'n' bass, a handful of techno, and further on, bumped into house, electro, funk, industrial freak beats, hip-hop, and even f****** Harold Budd. All are masterfully sliced, synched, and stirred by the coolest voice-sampling ever. And as an extra lure, Coldcut put some of their own early and pioneering stuff into the mix. If it is arguable to call 70 Minutes Of Madness the best DJ mix ever, then it was certainly the first to show off this kind of class and expertise. And it remains the ultimate blueprint for every single DJ mix that wants to claim a higher purpose than keeping the beats right between his/her favourite records. They don't call it madness for no reason. So if you don't have this (truly) Essential Mix in your possession, now is the time to get it. A piece of history that is worth everyone's while.
