New EP by one of the best Dutch guitar bands. On their last full-length 'Lunchbox Dialogues' they shifted to a somewhat more sophisticated and subtle sound, without losing the power and outstanding melodies. That approach worked excellently, and they played some great shows to support the album. For this EP they decided to put the rock on top of their list again, a decision I didn't understand completely, because it seemed like Celestial Season had reached a good and comfortable style with 'Lunchbox Dialogues'. After listening several times to 'Songs from the Second Floor', I still don't get it. Don't get me wrong, this EP isn't bad, but you just feel they can do much better than this. Starting off with 'Room 210', a great, edgy rock song with good melodies and a definite punk rock feel to it. Nothing wrong so far. 'Morning Theft' is a different story, however. As if Celestial Season set their own clock at least four years back, they come with a stoner rock outfit that don't fit too well anymore. The Soundgarden vocal line is OK, but the lack of melody in the bulldozer guitar riff doesn't live up to the expectations they created themselves with their last two records. And the outro is so cliché stoner rock. 'Watching the Fuss' makes up for it with a compact pop song in Motorpsycho/Queens of the Stone Age style. The future lies here, my dear Celestials! Strong melodies, great vocals, and a compact song structure make this one of their best efforts to date. Unfortunately, they blow the whole EP to pieces with 'Saturday (Wanna Go for a Ride)', a stoner rock instrumental with boring samples like "wanna take me for a ride?" and the obligatory racecar driving by. With this they put themselves back into the messy, greasy stoner rock pit they so eagerly climbed out of with (especially) 'Lunchbox Dialogues'. The live sets supporting this EP were equally dissapointing, because of the lack of variety between the songs. Unnecessary, and I hope they realise this themselves as well.
