Finally a band to look out for in Fenix. A few years ago this was a great venue, bands like Motorpsycho, 16 Horsepower, The Gun Club and many others played there, but the last few years the programmed bands weren't impressive. Until december 29. Celestial Season came and conquered the town of Sittard, and they did this in a spectacular way. The setlist wasn't that much different from the gig some months ago in Eindhoven, but this time the overall performance was much better. Starting of with the beautiful 'Millenarian drive', the tone was set for the rest of the evening. A very well balanced set followed, and the thing about Celestial Season that this is one of the few rockbands that still writes really good songs. Most other rockbands often are too busy being angry on one hand or being stoned on the other, forgetting the whole purpose of this kind of rockmusic: good songs. Not Celestial Season, they proved once again they have overcome the boundaries of stonerrock, and their songs are almost blueprints how modern alternative rock should sound. A bit of Motorpsycho here, a touch of Mogwai there, some Kyuss to spice things up, and to make it all complete some melancholic and dark Alice In Chains influences. And don't forget the great musicians, Rob Snijders is an exceptional drummer, Pim van Zanen and Olly Smit are very good guitarists, Jacques is the Dutch Scott Reeder, and Cyril Krutz has a really good voice, sometimes sounding like Billy Corgan if he could sing. But apart from all that comparing, Celestial Season very much has a sound of its own, and tonight they played so well that it seems impossible they didn't gain some more fans of their sound. All songs were great, but I kinda missed the Kyuss cover 'Thumb' which they played a few years ago also in Fenix as supportact from The Gathering. But I guess the time for such covers is over. The venue Fenix provided a terrific PA, the sound was loud and good, and the mood of both audience and band was great. A great evening. The only remark is that Suimasen didn't play this evening; on many other Celestial gigs they were booked too, but for some reason they didn't play in Sittard. Would have been great, the two best Dutch rockbands on one bill. One question remains: when will Celestial Season's breakthrough be?
