I don't think this year an album heavier than Cathedral's 'Endtyme'will be released. The initiators of doom metal are back with a new album, to prove they are still unequalled in playing indescribably slow and heavily tuned down guitar riffs. With this record it seems Cathedral wants to go back to the 'Forest Of Equilibrium'-style, their debut album of 1991, but, with thanks to producer Billy Anderson (Sleep, Orange Goblin) too, who created an extremely heavy, dynamic, spacious, open sound, 'Endtyme' has become a very modern sounding album as well. So you cannot say Cathedral haven't developed themselves in the past decade between these two albums. And with songs like 'Melancholy Emperor' (my personal favourite) and the battle chant(!) 'Whores To Oblivion' the groovy upbeat that typified their former album 'Caravan Beyond Redemption' is still present . Lee Dorrians' lyrics are mysterious and abstract as ever and that contributes to the dark, mystic, melancholic sphere of 'Endtyme'. A grand album.
