Hallelujah! Praise da Lord! When within the shady borders of this mortal coil your reviewer gets religious about dance music, this sentiment is almost certainly related to a new release or remix by one Carl Craig. Yet no new work of the man has come out. No, friends of the underground, it's older and more revolutionary work that is engaging some of the inhabitants of earth in a jubilant raindance: BFC's '90 Retroactive original of 'The Climax' is brought back into the light of day. Just like Plaid's first album 'Mbuki Mvuki' it has since its release lead an slumbering underground life due to the extremely limited pressing and the subsequent irrationally high prices that the collectors allowed themselves to pay for it. (For those who don't know: Retroactive was Carl Craig's first label; with his partner Damon Booker he released a mere six or seven untrackable brilliant twelfths. Within the two years of its existence it spawned more ideas and creativity than most artists are capable of in a decade. Just to keep you informed - da volgaBabe) But at the risk of sounding like a Carl Craig fanatic, this record still proves to be the source and blueprint of almost every good evolution in dance afterwards. On top of that it's the first record ever that, in our honest but humble opinion, succeeded in the almost organic fusing of the experimental European electronic tradition of the seventies and early eighties with the warm funk and soul elements of black music from the fifties and sixties on, an experiment that was later on radicalised even further when Craig came up with Planet E and his groundbreaking 69 project. If you listen to this and leave it at the shop instead of taking it home you ain't got no sense of history and better start working on that. A timeless classic and the beginning of many good things. And oh yeah: the sleeve's pink. Bless Carl Craig
