Life could have been worse for three teenagers from Northern Ireland. Instead of going out and smoking pot, guitarist and vocalist Tim Wheeler, bassist Mark Hamilton, and drummer Rick McMurray were signed to a record label, and in 1995 they released their noisy debut 'Trailer', first as an EP and later as a whole album containing high potential rock songs. And within a year they released '1977', that gave them international fame and featured hits like 'Goldfinger', 'Kung Fu', 'Oh Yeah', 'Girl from Mars', and 'Angel Interceptor'. Thse could now be considered as classics. But on 'Nu-Clear Sounds' (1998), the first album with new guitarist Charlotte Hatherly, they tried to shake off their britpop-image, which resulted in an overdose of loud guitar play and a lot of shitty songs. But just when I thought this identity crisis could be the end of the good Ash, there was 'Shining Light', the first single from the new album 'Free All Angels'. A nice guitar loop, a refrain that stays in your head, back to '1977'. Opening track 'Walking Barefoot' and 'Burn Baby Burn' also give the same sign that the good guitar tracks are back, but Ash didn't take the safe road. Wheeler sings like it's R&B on 'Candy', with easy-to-remember lyrics like "Don't you know it's allright to be alone/Yu can make it on your own yeah", and that with a fantastic fast drum loop. And then going on with the next rock-out 'Cherry Bomb' like nothing happened. Not a bad song on this album. The songs play and dig into your head, whether it is the wild 'Pacific Palisades' or the cool 'Submission', based on the sample saying "you turn me on". 'Free All Angels' should really turn you on.
