Tori Amos: Me And My Piano

Suffering from bad sound and a venue still filling up with Tori Amos fans, Ben Christophers played his opening set. Christophers' music seems to get lost in the big arena this venue is. The "new acoustics" deserve to be listened to in the right atmosphere; a small club with an audience paying attention.
At around 21.15 Tori Amos took the stage. Opening with the Eminem song '97 Bonnie and Clyde the stage was covered with a black shredded curtain in front of which the image of the matching pictures from the album booklet had been unrolled. In the last seconds of this song the curtain was dropped and Tori walked up the stage. Immediately the beautiful 'Icicle' was played. This tour, Tori didn't bring the band. The show was ever so good because of her playing solo. A dramatic change of setlist compared to the shows before, this show in Amsterdam featured the obscure Merman and the stunning pair Not the Red Baron ­ Flying Dutchman. From her latest offering, the album Strange Little Girls, only two songs were played, Joe Jackson's 'Real Men' and 'Rattlesnakes'. But it was the blend of album tracks, b-sides and other obscure tracks that made this show so special. Songs from every album were played with an amazing 'Tear In Your Hand' and 'Hey Jupiter' as highlights. Breathtaking was the performance of 'Me and Gun', as always done a capella, leaving the huge 5000 people capacity room dead silent. Tori Amos played an unusual set in Amsterdam, set some strickt rules for security (the bars had to be closed and no door was allowed to open during a song) and she wasn't very talkative. Bear in mind though, that shows like these where an artist plays a show with so many obscure songs are very very rare and so everybody went home more than satisfied. After a show like this, nobody thinks of the ridiculously highpriced merchandise and the soundmix missing perfection. A night of Tori Amos, a night of bliss.
