Last night I caught the Nine Inch Nails/A Perfect Circle show in San Francisco. I must say, I was not disappointed. NIN is one of the best live bands, no doubt. And APC with Maynard (vocalist of both Tool and A Perfect Circle) are amazing.
We got to the Cow Palace around 7 with showtime at 8. However, the line had to be a mile long. It was amazing how far it stretched out, then wrapped around.
Well, we finally got to the door, where my friend saw Jerry from Papa Roach hanging out. We went right inside though, 'cause APC had already started. We got inside during the final parts of 'Magdalena'. I guess they opened with 'Renholder' and 'The Hollow' (The song I wanted to hear the most). It didn't take long to realize that Maynard sounds 10 times better live than he does on cd. He just blew me away. The sound was crystal clear, you could hear every note on every instrument. Maynard even talked to the crowd a little.
Their set was: 'Renholder', 'The Hollow', 'Magdalena', 'Sleeping Beauty', 'Brena', 'Orestes', '3 Libras', 'Thinking Of You', 'Thomas', 'Rose', 'Judith'. Don't miss an opportunity to see this band.
After an interlude the lights shut off as the NIN took to the stage, behind the curtains. They came out playing 'Pinion'. The curtains opened as the band kicked into 'Terrible Lie'. They went right on playing 'Sin', 'March Of The Pigs', and 'Reptile'. Next up was some new stuff, 'The Frail' and 'The Wretched'. They just kept playing straight through, not taking many breaks. 'Gave Up' was next, followed by the calmer tunes 'La Mer' and 'The Great Below'. After playing 'The Mark Has Been Made' they turned back the clock and sped it up a bit playing 'Wish' and 'Suck'. Immediately after 'Suck', they jumped into 'Closer' and then ripped into 'Head Like A Hole', which seemed to be one of the highest points of the night.
After an about 10-minute break, Trent Reznor and Co. came out for a great 5-song encore. It started with 'The Day The World Went Away' and then went into the instrumental 'Just Like You Imagined' which sounded great. Next up was 'The Fragile', which the crowd seemed overly pleased to hear, including myself. They then tore the place up with a energetic playing of 'Starfuckers Inc'. Finally the set came to an end with the perfect song - 'Hurt'. As soon as he started singing it the crowd was into it. There was just something moving about the song, maybe I'm just a pussy, but I was fighting back tears. I guess the mood was just set right, but the show couldn't of ended any better.
This was just a great show and I feel privileged that I got to see these two bands finally. The venue was great. There really wasn't a bad seat in the house and the sound was extraordinary for both bands. Don't ever pass up a chance at seeing them.
