The London Calling festival at the Paradiso in Amsterdam has a great reputation. For a few years in a row the best to-be-discovered bands from England (in the beginning, but now from all over the planet) came to play. So great expectations in advance.
This evenings kick off was done by a band called Fuzzy Lightyears, their intro was really fuzzy and promising but as soon as their singer came on stage the magic was over. She thought she had charisma, but all she had was an irritating Aqua-esque voice.
Next up was Birthday, at first it seemed I was looking at a Mogwai-meets-Radiohead kinda band. But the experimental aspect of their music faded along the show. From halfway on they were more or less becoming a poppy version of Kid A, but not as well played.
The third band this evening showed great musical skills. Of course they were the A.C. Acoustics. They played a nice and intimid set which was nicely built up and resulted in the evenings first climax. This gig was definitely of a higher level than the ones I had seen so far.
And from the first climax straight into the next. Tahiti 80 was playing downstairs and were the first to start a massive swing. Their nice mix of poppy songs combined with a sort of 80s soundtrack music really got some feet of the floor. Especially that trumpet was a very nice addition to the normal band setup and all bandmembers proved to be multi-instrumentalists.
I don`t like boxing and went upstairs, Mo Solid Gold was playing. I don`t quite remember what it was like, I only remember the singer who appeared to be the black Gary Stinger (Reef) and maybe the band was like Reef too.
Then there was the band I had been waiting for, Urusei Yatsura. They kicked ass! A very good and energetic show got me dancing again. They played some of their best songs and not even so many songs from their new album. It is a shame that there were only about 10 people who really knew this Glasgow based band.
I didn`t get to see the last band, but my evening was already fantastic. At the end London Calling still has a great reputation.
