It doesn't happen often that concerts are planned for a Tuesday evening. One would expect few to be crazy enough to go out right in the middle of their week. Nevertheless, the church-turned-concert hall Bibelot was already well filled by the time Blackshine, the first band for the evening, started their set.
Unfortunately, the acoustics at Bibelot are horrible, so during the first couple of songs by these Swedes, a jumble of noise was torturing our eardrums. But after that, the sound was adjusted and we could finally hear the music decently.
Blackshine, who started in 1988 as a death metal band named Hetsheads, nowadays play something they call "goth 'n' roll." Their current sound has quite a few similarities with Motörhead, but also with bands like Entombed and Terra Firma. However, according to Joakim Stabel, one of the guitarists in Blackshine, their next album (due in spring of 2003) may sound differently, again, due to the influence of their new drummer.
The second band on the bill was, suprisingly enough, not Lacuna Coil, but Sentenced. Originally, Sentenced was supposed to headline on the entire tour, but for a number of shows (Netherlands, France, and UK), Lacuna Coil became the main act of the package.
During their "60 Minutes Of Misery," as the ever-cheery Finns named their show, Sentenced played almost every song from their latest masterpiece The Cold White Light. But classics from previous albums, like 'Sun Won't Shine,' 'The Suicider,' and 'Nepenthe' weren't forgotten either.
It's quite a shame that a band like Sentenced, who have been releasing one great album after another for the past few years, still hasn't broken through. Hopefully, this tour and appearances at the summer festivals in 2003 will change this!
Finally, the members of Lacuna Coil entered the stage, and it immediately became clear how popular this band has become in a relatively short time. By that time, the entire venue was filled with raging fans, and all the songs were sung along word by word.
The Italians played for well over an hour and treated us to a mix of songs, mainly off their new record Comalies and its predecessor Unleashed Memories. But eventually, after an encore of two songs, the fun came to an end.
For those who just can't get enough of Lacuna Coil: They will play at some of the major summer festivals in 2003. And with powerful performances like these, it's only a matter of time before Lacuna Coil rises to the top of the metal scene (next to Sentenced, of course!).
