If beforehand I would have had to make a prediction about which band would
fare better in the well-filled Patronaat, I would've said Spoiler. That band
has just released an album filled with a refreshing mix of stoner and
melodic hard rock, whereas Fu Manchu keeps recycling the same stoner rock
clichés and has a singer who knows only one melody. In reality it turned out
to be completely different.
Spoiler suffered from sloppy timing. I know there are loads of indie rock
bands that thrive on their "charming" sloppiness, but for stoner rock it is
the ultimate sin: Groove is the essence of the genre. Add an abysmal podium
presentation to the list of Spoiler's sins (if you are going for a hard rock
poser style, you gotta go all the way; otherwise you'll end up looking like
a bunch of jerks pretending to be rock stars!), and you've got a pretty pathetic
end result.
Fu Manchu doesn't have a podium presentation. They just come out and play
their songs. Which are all the same. And consist entirely of genre clichés.
And are badly sung. And groove like a motherfuckin' herd of white elephants
on LSD. Fu Manchu gave Spoiler a musical lecture on the need for practice.
And the audience on the need for variation. But I still would rather have well-prepared fast-food than a completely
failed attempt at gastronomy.
