Two acts tonight: San Francisco outfit Tarentel and Fly Pan Am, who boast some sort of connection with the almighty Godspeed You Black Emperor! (a shared guitarist).
Tarentel turn out to be a run-of-the-mill Dead Can Dance clone, who perform an uninspired (and uninspiring) set consisting of a lukewarm rehash of tired clichés, prefab drones, and artfuck guitar noodling. The only applause they get is when they're finally (after an hour or so) done unleashing their garbage on an uninterested audience, which pretty much says it all.
Next up is Fly Pan Am. On record, they indulge in way, way too much experimentation: You'll find 15-minute songs that contain one or two cool bits hidden among a barrage of tape loop madness. This can be a recipe for success, but with Fly Pan Am it sounds more like they couldn't get the mixture quite right: The tracks are fragmented, shifting from run-of-the-mill ho-hum rock to hiss within the blink of an eye (and always when you least expect it and when it's at its most unwelcome). Live, however, they turn out to be the most powerful rock band you're likely to have seen in years. They're loud, focused, hypnotic, and extremely forceful. Fly Pan Am live deliver simple yet potent riffs in five-minute doses, with no artfuckery slowing things down. Though the riffs themselves are rather repetitive (obviously), the "pieces" are kept interesting by the varied noises humming along in the background, coming from the three tape players the band bring with them on stage as well as from one of the band's two guitarists, who spices things up with an ungodly amount of feedback and guitar growl. This way, Fly Pan Am manage to make even the most cliché surfrock riff sound new.
As rock bands this good are scarce nowadays, should you get a chance to see Fly Pan Am perform, by all means do yourself a favour and go.
